Reddit’s 86% Drop in ChatGPT Search Citations

For years, Reddit has been one of the most consistently cited sources in AI search, so a sudden drop in its visibility is worth paying attention to. New tracking data suggests ChatGPT sharply cut back on how often it cites Reddit, and it happened almost overnight. Reddit’s share of ChatGPT Search citations dropped from 3.83% to 0.52% in mid-August, a fall of 86% in just four days.

The timing of this development is interesting because it follows changes to how ChatGPT performs searches. However, there’s still no clear explanation for why Reddit’s citation share dropped so sharply. OpenAI hasn’t confirmed what caused the decline, and reports linking it directly to changes in ChatGPT’s search behaviour don’t fully match the timeline. For brands monitoring their search visibility, the lesson here is that your presence in AI search can change from one day to the next.

What Happened to Reddit’s ChatGPT Citations?

The data comes from Promptwatch, an AI visibility platform that tracks millions of responses from the major AI tools. Here’s what it found:

  • Between 18 July and 7 August, Reddit made up an average of 3.83% of ChatGPT Search citations
  • On 8 August, that share slipped from the high 3% range into the mid 2s
  • On 14 August, it fell below 1%, then averaged just 0.52% up to 17 August, an 86.4% relative drop
  • Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode showed only gradual declines over the same period, with AI Overviews easing from around 2.5% to 2.1%.

Some reports suggest the decline may have started on 8 August. That day, ChatGPT began pointing far more of its background searches (the “fan-out” queries it runs while building an answer) at individual websites. Those site-specific searches jumped from 0.37% to 16.8% of all fan-out queries in a single day. However, the timing doesn’t quite fit. The change in this query fan-out behaviour happened several days before Reddit’s citation share decreased. Promptwatch hasn’t ruled out a data collection issue on its side.

This isn’t the first time Reddit’s visibility has changed significantly. A similar decline happened in ChatGPT around September 2025. At the time, analyst Kevin Indig suggested the likely cause was Google removing a search parameter that data providers used to reach deeper results (where Reddit threads often sit) – nothing to do with OpenAI or Reddit at all

Reddit and AI Visibility Volatility

News like this can feel unsettling, when AI visibility shifts quickly and without warning. The Reddit example shows just how dependent AI visibility is on the platform producing the answer. A website can have strong content and continue doing everything right, yet still see its visibility change when an AI platform adjusts how it discovers and selects information. Platforms rarely announce which sources they’re leaning on but it’s interesting that Reddit has a paid content deal with OpenAI, which suggests commercial access to content doesn’t guarantee prominent surfacing in AI answers.

Reddit has also taken a strict approach to crawlers. Most search engines, web crawlers and third-party AI bots are blocked unless they have an agreement with Reddit. Google is the exception because of its specific data-sharing and training partnership with the platform. Reddit’s user-generated content (UGC) is valuable, particularly to AI companies, so it wants them to access it through official agreements rather than unrestricted scraping.

AI visibility factors within your control

Platforms like ChatGPT and Google’s AI experiences are constantly changing how they search the web, select sources, and construct their answers. Citations and visibility aren’t fixed and it’s important not to have a knee-jerk reaction if your brand has a presence on Reddit. Don’t abandon Reddit, but don’t build your whole AI strategy around it. If your customers genuinely gather there, keep showing up because it helps real people, whatever the citation charts say. We put our energy into what we can control:

  • Tracking AI visibility and referrals month on month
  • Keeping website content accurate, helpful, and well structured
  • Building a presence across several trusted sources.

ChatGPT’s apparent shift towards searching specific sites directly is worth watching. If AI tools are choosing more deliberately where to look, a clear, well-structured and trustworthy website matters more than ever. It’s the same work that helps you rank in traditional search.
