What is Microsoft Clarity?

Microsoft Clarity is a free tool for website owners to better understand user behaviour

Microsoft launched an exciting new tool towards the end of 2020 called Microsoft Clarity. After first becoming available in 2018 to a limited number of users, Microsoft Clarity finished its closed beta phase and is now available, free of charge, for anyone to use.

What is Microsoft Clarity?

Microsoft Clarity is a free tool for website owners to better understand user behaviour. The product provides analysts with a suite of functionality to track, analyse and visualise how users interact with a website or web application. As explained below, the tool provides useful insight for any web design agency looking to improve aspects like conversion rates and user engagement.

Several dashboard style views are available which display various metrics that are useful to analyse behaviours, such as clicks, scrolling and time on site. Heatmaps display both click and scroll behaviours, supported by session playback to drill down specific sessions – these are really useful and visual methods to help understand user behaviour.

The Microsoft Clarity tools makes use of machine learning to provide a range of filters, including “rage clicks” or “excessive clicks” to help identify potential issues.

When Should I Use Microsoft Clarity?

Microsoft Clarity provides tools to gather valuable data about how people are using your website. When carrying out conversion rate optimisation or investigating user experience improvements, tools such as these help us to make better, more informed recommendations – basing decisions on evidence. For example, during an SEO project, improving rankings and traffic is great but we also want to improve the number of conversions too. These conversions could be form submissions, purchases or phone calls. Before updates are deployed, a hypothesis can be outlined and then the results measured – so we track whether or not the change had the desired results.
