Almost 2 years ago, Google announced plans to switch to a mobile-first index. In short, this is Google’s response to the steady increase in mobile usage on the web and mobile searches. The switch puts a lot more emphasis on mobile and responsive web design as part of an SEO strategy.
This latest development sees Google apply their new mobile-first index to more and more websites. Sites that have been switched over will receive a notification via Search Console letting webmasters know mobile-first indexing has been enabled.
It’s unclear how much of Google’s current index will be transferred but they have stated this latest batch of sites will be those who are following “best practices” for mobile-first indexing. To ensure your site it ready to be migrated check out Google’s set of mobile-first best practices.
