Anthropic Announces Claude Will Allow Third-Party Agent Usage Again

Anthropic is changing direction on third-party agent access for Claude. After tightening restrictions in April this year, the company has now confirmed that paid Claude plans will start supporting programmatic usage through external agent tools from the 15th of June. This includes tools and workflows powered by Claude Agent SDK, claude -p, Claude Code GitHub Actions and third-party apps built on the Agent SDK, including OpenClaw and Hermes. However, the return of third-party agent support comes with a significant change in how usage is handled.

 

Agent Usage Is Being Separated From Standard Claude Subscriptions

Back in early April, Anthropic began restricting the use of Claude subscriptions for powering external AI agents. The reason for this was that users were consuming significantly more compute power than their subscription plans were designed to cover. Developers were reportedly running thousands of dollars’ worth of token usage through third-party agents while paying only for a standard monthly subscription. Rather than fully blocking the use of these tools, Anthropic redirected them toward API billing, where usage is charged separately based on consumption. While this was the reported reasoning, we suspect the move was motivated by Anthropic’s wanting to nudge more users towards its Claude Cowork agentic tool.

Now, the company is introducing something slightly different. It has been announced that, from June 2026, paid Claude plans will include a dedicated monthly credit pool specifically for programmatic and agent-based usage. The credits will vary depending on the paid plan you subscribe to. Pro users will receive $20 per month in agentic credits, Max 5x users get $100, and Max 20x users gain $200 in credits, for example. Once those agentic credits are depleted, users can either continue using their agents via API billing or pause usage until their credits reset the following month. Unused credits won’t roll over between billing cycles.

One of the bigger changes here is that Anthropic is separating interactive Claude usage from automated agent usage. Standard subscription limits will now primarily apply to Claude chat and Claude Code. Meanwhile, agentic and programmatic workflows will instead draw from the new monthly credit allocation. This move signals how AI providers might structure offerings of the future.

This distinction is important because agent tools behave differently from regular chatbot use. Automated agents can continuously execute tasks and chain requests together, which means they consume far larger volumes of tokens in the background. So, in many ways, this new development shows how traditional subscription models become difficult to sustain once autonomous agents come into play.

 

What This Means for AI Adoption

For most businesses, this update sheds some light on the future of AI-powered workflows. Third-party agents are becoming more useful for automation, coding workflows, internal tooling and AI-assisted operations. Anthropic’s reopening of support for external agents may reflect the current state of the AI ecosystem, even as it now seeks to restrict usage. Competitors like OpenAI leaned into agents like OpenClaw and Hermes, encouraging usage via their subscription, forcing Anthropic to act. As AI tools move from simple chat interfaces into autonomous systems and workflows, pricing models are starting to change, too. Rather than having flat monthly subscriptions covering everything, companies are starting to separate interactive usage, automated usage and API consumption. We think this trend will likely continue as AI agents become more capable and more widely adopted.
